See the Work

Moss Point Community Planning Workshop/Exhibit

“It’s important for the community to see this and envision this; too often the greater public is left out of planning decisions that directly affect them- this is a chance for them to see these developments and have a chance to comment on them.”

— David Perkes, Director, Gulf Coast Community Design Studio

Moss Point, Mississippi has been the subject of myriad urban plans since Hurricane Katrina damaged much of the town in 2005. In each case, planners swept in and drew images of what the area ‘should’ look like before sweeping out. The National Endowment for the Arts and their Mayor’s Institute on City Design held a charrette with public officials, Tulane University School of Architecture’s Regional Urban Design Center, and the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio (GCCDS) in spring 2009 to evaluate the plans and create a clear plan for moving forward on the downtown redevelopment plans.

As an effort to gain public input and increase awareness of the forthcoming development, the GCCDS prepared materials for an exhibit that was both comprehensive and accessible to people unfamiliar to planning and architecture. The exhibit included explanatory boards with text, images, diagrams, and renderings as well as a large physical model of downtown Moss Point. The residents who attended the opening or month-long viewing period of the exhibit were invited to provide feedback on the plan and offer suggestions on possible changes. As a result of this interaction and a new mayor in a leadership position, many changes have been implemented and the plan is moving forward, with several components currently under construction.
