Jacob’s Place

Healthy Housing

“In 1992 this portion of the street and neighborhood was horrible. Since then, there’s been at least $36 million dollars worth of investment into these rundown buildings and vacant lots, and it has transformed the neighborhood.”

— Robert Donovan, Construction Supervisor, FBHC

Jacob’s Place is a recently completed 63-unit housing development. This mixed-use facility incorporates residential apartments, community space, and an early education facility on the main floor. Perhaps more importantly, it is a symbol of the efforts of a community focused on revitalization and empowerment.

The development is named after, and built in honor of, Astin Jacobo—a longtime neighborhood leader from the Crotona section of the Bronx. Jacob, as he was affectionately known, led the battle in Crotona and the Northwest Bronx for affordable housing, youth recreation and community renewal. A mural in the building’s community room will recount his accomplishments.

FBHC has a stated goal to seek proactive measures in the battles against rising building operating costs and health risks for its residents. Reflecting that goal, Jacob’s Place is FBHC’s most sustainable project to-date. It incorporates a host of sustainable products and finish materials, as well as energy efficient windows, fixtures, and appliances. Esther assisted Fordham Bedford in the execution and installation of a photovoltaic panel system and a large, green roof system at the commencement of her Fellowship. FBHC and Esther will put the final sustainable touches on the building when the rainwater harvesting system is installed to irrigate and feed its surrounding landscape.
