    A new Rose Fellowship opportunity is available with the La Plata County Regional Housing Authority in Durango, Colorado, located in the southwestern foot of the Rocky Mountains. Durango is famous for its whitewater rafting and kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, backpacking, skiing, snowboarding, hiking and more, but these same attractions have caused a crises in the availability of affordable housing. Applications are due September 15, 2007.

    Organizational change takes time and effort. Noel Toro assisted LINC Housing’s grant writers with technical expertise on green building and helped prepare a compelling application to the Home Depot Foundation. The result was an award of a $150,000 grant that will provide the necessary means to, among other things, educate LINC staff in green development hire specialized consultants for four pilot projects and facilitate green charrettes for two projects currently in predevelopment

    Los Angeles has the 6th largest rate of high school dropouts in the nation. Noel Toro, in collaboration with LINC Cares (LINC Housing’s Resident Services Department) and 5 Rose Fellows from around the country prepared a Career Day to help students at Bartlett Hill Manor learn more about career opportunities in architecture and construction. The activity was part of Make a Difference Day, a national day of volunteering.

    Effective Sept. 1, Katie Swenson, founder and executive director of the Charlottesville Community Design Center, will assume leadership as director of the Frederick P. Rose Fellowship program. Sponsored by Enterprise Community Partners, the fellowship connects young, public interest architects who are committed to sustainable community design in low-income communities across the country.

    Once again the City Council of Meadville makes a final recommendation that funds be provided to rehabilitate a single family home in the designated target neighborhood. The Meadville Redevelopment Authority will now make funds available to the Coalition on Housing Needs to begin construction on the property.

    The approval of a reconfiguring of H.P. Way park was requried in order to proceed with design work. The Meadville Area Water Authority owns the land which is adjacent to a resevoir, but the City of Meadville manages the surface which is currently a park.

  • Hope Community Center

    The Hope Community has reconnected a divided neighborhood by the creation of a community garden and path that links the 10th and Page neighborhood to its local elementary school. The renovated original building is now complimented by a new building that create an inner courtyard for neighborhood celebreation and learning for all ages.

  • Governor Rendells helps support development in Meadville

    The Meadville Redevelopment Authority requested that I help develop schematic rendering for the re-use of the Talon Zipper building. The new tenant would take advantage of Pennsylvania’s “Keystone Opportunity Zone” tax abatement program. Governor Rendell recognized our work with a $1.5 Million gift.

    Rose Fellow Nathaniel Corum working with Navajo nonprofit (Indigenous Community Enterprises) staff worked alongside Navajo elders and tribal members to arrive at culturally-appropriate home designs related to the traditional Navajo ‘hogan.’ Construction of several prototype homes arising from the process begin in 2007.

    This article is a descriptive piece about a long awaited improvement to the City of Meadville. Market Alley Pedestrian revitalization was concieved of in 1999. The funding was available through PennDOT’s TEA 21 (Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century). The construction date listed was actually one year premature.

This was a surprise to us since this same firm conducted a survey one year prior and instructed us that single bedroom apartments were the most highly demanded and necessary housing units for the community.
