City Council of Meadville approves use of CDBG monies for housing rehabilitation.

Once again the City Council of Meadville makes a final recommendation that funds be provided to rehabilitate a single family home in the designated target neighborhood. The Meadville Redevelopment Authority will now make funds available to the Coalition on Housing Needs to begin construction on the property.

The City Coucil followed through on their claim that they would provide funds for housing rehabilitation. They approved the transfer of money to a single family house redevelopment project in which the Coalition on Housing Needs would become the owner and manager of the property.

The City Coucil of Meadville denied the request by the Coalition on Housing Needs to fulfill their option to purchase property for the Cottage St. apartments. Again, there was misconception about the cost of construction.

There had been many misconceptions announced in public by Meadville’s City Council on what is feasible and energy efficient construction with old housing stock. I chose to clarify the issue and encourage public support.

Financial consultants for the Coalition on Housing Needs instructed the board to change the program of the proposed Cottage St. apartments. This was a surprise to us since this same firm conducted a survey one year prior and instructed us that single bedroom apartments were the most highly demanded and necessary housing units for the community.

The Crawford County Commissioners have always been very supportive of low-income housing development. They have requested as well that the Coalition on Housing Needs start to build outside of the City of Meadville.

Liberty House opens

After a long and difficult construction administration process, the Coalition on Housing Needs and myself were happy to hold an open house celebration for Liberty House - a transitional housing development for homeless familes. There are 6 units in the building and the offices of the Coalition on Housing Needs.

Ground breaking celebration for Liberty House

Prior to the beginning of my fellowship, I was on the governing board of the Crawford County Coalition on Housing Needs, Inc. I joined the Coalition just as they were finalizing the construction documents for a trasitional housing development. This event celebrated the groundbreaking of that development.
