“The SWMHP is a strong development organization with a national reputation that is involved in most aspects of community development work. The SWMHP works closely with its communities to define, document and solve community development needs. Join us in this exciting opportunity to understand how green design can benefit affordable housing developments as we participate in a Minnesota Green Cities Initiative to impact policy change in Minnesota.”

— Rick Goodemann, Executive Director, SWMHP

Every community has its unique needs. Urban, suburban, rural; new or established; mixed use, multi-generational, immigrant, and the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership (SWMHP) embraces them all. A regional community development corporation with national standing, the SWMHP has a long list of projects in the planning, predevelopment and conceptual stages. Often created in partnership with other notable organizations, these projects run the gamut from addressing the urgent need for decent, affordable housing, to research on developing healthy homes, and creating a handbook for statewide green development. For the Rose Fellow, SWMHP’s multi-faceted menu of projects translates to the opportunity to contribute to and learn from the full spectrum of architecture’s influence.

The rural Minnesota Fellow will also work in partnership with the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund (GMHF) on two Research & Development projects, including testing the cost impacts of the installation of basic green product integration within in single-family home construction and providing data to revise the current Building Better Neighborhood manual. The Building Better Neighborhood manual is a how to manual on developing affordable single-family developments using a balanced approach of cost containment and value added strategies. The manual was first published in 2001 by the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund and Cermac-Rhoades Architects.

Mission

The Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership (SWMHP) is a non-profit community development corporation serving 30 counties in rural Minnesota. We aim to build strong and healthy places to live so that the communities of our region thrive.

The Greater Minnesota Housing Fund (GMHF) advances affordable housing in Greater Minnesota by directly funding affordable housing projects; by providing technical support to local communities and businesses; by linking projects with financial resources; by securing additional resources for affordable housing; and by using research and program development activities to identify new and innovative ways of increasing affordable housing production.
