PathStone

With its white sand beaches, wedding cake architecture, and backdrop of verdant mountains, Puerto Rico’s second largest city of Ponce easily lives up to its nickname of La Perla del Sur (Pearl of the South). But, while Ponce’s economy is well developed and the region draws high-end developers, the city’s environs are also home to many of Puerto Rico’s low-income agricultural workers. Their need for safe, decent and affordable, hurricane-resistant housing went largely unmet until identified by PathStone two years ago.

PathStone’s housing development efforts marked the first time there had been a sustained effort by a nonprofit organization to develop affordable rental properties in rural parts of the Island. With help from Enterprise Community Partners, the organization produced a Business Plan for Real Estate Development around Puerto Rico.

Today, PathStone is striving to create a new formula for affordable housing in Puerto Rico: one that is environmentally sound, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing. The Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow will have a unique opportunity to identify, develop and produce standards for state-of-the-art design suited to the region’s culture and available local building materials, and to incorporate community involvement in the planning process. This work will lay the foundation for best practices in design, construction and planning for affordable housing developments in Ponce and across the Island.
