Neighborhood Progress, Inc.
Like the mythical phoenix, Cleveland, Ohio has experienced rebirth several times in its history. Mostly recently, this former manufacturing town on Lake Erie’s southern shore rose from the urban abandonment of the late 1960s and 1970s, with its infamous fire on the Cuyahoga River, to rebuild its infrastructure, diversify its economy, and invest in the arts. Today, Cleveland is a paramount example of public-private partnerships done right, with a revitalized downtown and urban renaissance.
The recent economic downturn, however, is yet again challenging Cleveland’s hard-won progress, as foreclosures skyrocket and threaten neighborhood stability. Neighborhood Progress, Inc (NPI) is committed to strengthening these endangered neighborhoods through targeted programs geared to empower nonprofit developers and to help revitalize the neighborhoods hardest hit by foreclosures. NPI’s enviable record over the past 20 years gives every reason to believe the organization will be successful, with 6,443 units of new and rehabilitated housing completed and the development of 2.5 million square feet of new and rehabilitated commercial space.
The Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow will be an integral part of the NPI team. Working with NPI’s president and senior staff, along with community members, the Fellow will tackle a range of challenges from design and implementation of green, real estate development projects to local, regional and federal policy advocacy on issues related to sustainability, and the social and economic recovery of older industrial cities.
